What To Expect In Therapy?

Therapists do not seek to fix people, rather we help individuals to evolve better ways to cope and deal with their problems.  This naturally leads to the development of resilience, and more acceptance of the challenges and difficulties faced in life.

Therapy isn't easy, it takes a great deal of courage to undertake, as well as commitment.  What I offer is a compassionate, empathetic and safe environment where we will work together to build a genuine, trusting relationship and strong therapeutic bond.   As a relational therapist this is paramount, no matter your reason for seeking therapy.  Together we will explore your issues, experiences, feelings and behaviours, and how they relate to the way you view yourself, others and the world, and in turn how they impact your life.  With new insights and awareness come new options for growth and change, whilst helping you to relate to yourself, others and the world in way that is more satisfying, and allows you to be more spontaneous, so that you can become more wholly yourself.

If you decide to embark on this journey with me you will discover lots about yourself along the way.  I believe everyone is capable of healing, growth and transformation, and deserves to live a happy and fulfilled life.  We are all works in progress, and no matter our age we can improve our lives.

"Therapy is about understanding the self that you are.  But part of getting to know yourself is to unknow yourself - to let go of the limiting stories you've told yourself about who you are so that you aren't trapped by them, so you can live your life and not the story you've been telling yourself about your life."

First Session

Our first session together will be an assessment.  Don't worry if you feel nervous, that is perfectly understandable.  I will guide you gently through the whole process which will involve me asking you questions about you and your history.  This allows me to get a better idea of what it is that brings you to therapy and what you need help with.  This is also a chance for you and I to meet face-to-face so that you can get a better sense of me and if you and I would be a good fit to work together.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

As everyone is different there are no set amount of sessions.  I offer both short-term and long-term therapy.  Short term work is typically six to twelve sessions whilst longer term therapy is usually over many months or even years.  This is something we can discuss together in the initial assessment to find out what would be best for you.

What are Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Counselling is typically known as a shorter-term talking therapy, that aims to help people resolve current issue's or problems, such as a recent bereavement or loss, or symptoms of anxiety.

Psychotherapy is a longer-term process, and an in depth relational approach.  Early past experiences are looked at and worked through which allows for the development of insight and awareness around how these experiences have not only shaped who you have become as a person, but also how they link to the way you are living out your life.  This allows for growth, transformation, and long term change.

"The truth is: You are not broken and in need of fixing.  You are, rather, wounded and in need of healing."
